Self-organised Groups

Sew Inspired

A group of experienced stitchers who were formed in 2012 out of ‘Crafty Creations’, an art/craft course run by ASCEND.  They are a social enterprise group, which produces quality items that are sold at events run by ASCEND and other local organisations.  The proceeds of the sales go to ASCEND.

The group meets weekly on Thursday mornings from 10am to 12.30pm.  Over the years, it has reduced in numbers to 3/4 regular attendees, who pay £2.50 each week towards the room rental.   The group has booked tables to fundraise at events this May and December at All Saints Church and at Carpenders Park Community Fair.

Creative Writing

This group has been meeting for about 10 years on Thursday afternoons between 1pm and 3pm in the foyer at All Saints.  There are 10 regular attendees, who pay £2.50 each week.

For the Love of Books

The book group was formed 8 years ago and meets at All Saints on the third Thursday of the month from 2.15pm to 3.45pm.  There are 11 regular attendees.  Previously they met on an ad hoc basis every four to six weeks.  In recent months since there is now a clash with the Creative Writing group, they have been meeting in Rooms 3/4 at All Saints.  There has never been a charge for this group.  Their next session is scheduled for 18 April.

Page Turners

This course is funded by the Co-op and has been running for the past year evolving from ASCEND’s literacy classes.  There are currently 4 clients who have two individual 30 minute face-to-face sessions with a volunteer each week on Monday and Friday mornings.  Sessions are held at All Saints.  Resources have been provided free of charge by the Shannon Trust.  One of the students and his volunteer have been piloting the Shannon Trust’s new digital platform and providing feedback.  At present ASCEND is the only organisation offering this programme in Hertfordshire and recently attended a symposium to share and discuss future development with the Shannon Trust who are looking to extend the offer with numeracy programmes.

The facilitator for the programme is Janet Lofthouse.
